Do Something.
“This family came with nothing.”
Those words came to us last week from a school staff member requesting clothing for a young girl.
She had no clothes of her own that fit.
She’d been wearing things that were too small. All she needed was jeans, shirts, a jacket, a hoodie, shoes, socks and underwear.
So simple.
We hear heartbreaking stories at FOUND. Every single week.
Some are harder to hear than others.
Some stay with us long after we’ve closed our computers and gone home for the day.
And while we’re certainly not immune to the sadness of what some children are experiencing, we’ve learned to channel that emotion into something much more productive.
We get to DO SOMETHING.
That’s what energizes us.
Not the heartbreaking circumstances.
Not the overwhelming needs.
It’s the opportunity to respond.
When that request came in, we didn’t have to start looking for someone willing to help. We didn’t have to launch a fundraiser, organize a clothing drive or ask our community to go shopping.
We were already equipped to respond.
That’s what our community has built through FOUND.
A network of generous donors, faithful volunteers, school staff and supporters who make it possible for us to meet needs quickly, often before the rest of the community even knows those needs exist.
The clothing is ready.
The shoes are waiting.
The volunteers know what to do.
And our relationships with educators allow us to get those resources directly into the hands of children who need them.
It’s a remarkably simple concept. But behind that simplicity is an enormous amount of generosity, preparation and intentional work.
And it’s working.
I think sometimes we underestimate the power of simply being prepared to help.
We can’t change every circumstance that brings a child to us. We can’t undo everything they’ve experienced or solve every problem their family faces.
But we can make sure that little girl has clothes that fit.
We can make sure she has a warm jacket when the temperature drops.
We can give her a new pair of shoes and the dignity of walking into school feeling comfortable and cared for.
We can do something.
And thanks to the community that continues to fuel this mission, we do.
Every single day.
