Scott Sean White is BACK!!

Did you miss Scott Sean White when he performed last fall at our fundraiser? It was so good - we brought him BACK! We've got the patio booked at Picosos on Saturday from 6-8. Grab a ticket (www.thefoundmission.com/market/p/fuel-the-future) and join us.

Here's a story from our founder that was inspired by Scott's song "Pulling Weeds".

My sweet boys bought me my favorite wine, ordered dinner from my favorite place, and we sat around the table and ate. With eye contact and conversation and sharing memories and all the good things that fill this mamas heart. It was simple and simply PERFECT.

We had about 15 minutes after supper before American Idol came on. It was a cool evening, so I decided to quickly pull the weeds that had grown up in the front (tiny) yard of mine. Because I’m cheesy and like to make everything feel like an experience, I played the song Pulling Weeds by Scott Sean White while I was out there. My parents and I heard him at Hotel Turkey when we went a few weeks ago. He’s a songwriter and story teller - and his songs express the stories he shares. If you know me and my parents - you know we loved it!!

His song Pulling Weeds is so simple and so powerful. These are my favorite lyrics:

“I’m pulling weeds, one at a time, anything that chokes the life outta who I wanna be.

Gonna plant new seeds, but first things first, get my hands down in this dirt before the roots get too deep.

I’m pulling weeds.”

I thought the boys were playing video games while I was out there so I was pleasantly very surprised when they came out to help. There weren’t many weeds because the yard is small and is mostly turf. One of my boys was really surprised at how many weeds were growing through and around the turf. He kept saying “it shouldn’t be happening.” But they laid the turf sloppily and we’ve had a lot of rain so … I told him … it’s just the way it is.

We finished within 10 minutes and were all settled in to watch American Idol with the window open as the rain fell on the weedless front yard.

My heart was full because I was surrounded by my boys and thankful for the illustration God had just given to all of us.

Weeds are determined.
Undeterred by turf if at all possible.

They’ll grow anywhere. You can google “odd places weeds have grown” if you want pics and proof.

The whole experience felt like a metaphor for my life.

For so long, I really believed that living religiously would insulate me from a lot of pain and problems. When weeds would grow in my life, I figured I must be doing something wrong. I thought correcting my mistakes would fix everything. It was an attempt to control my circumstances on my own. Sure, I would repent and accept forgiveness and sound spiritual but I wasn’t understanding grace.

I was planting turf and hoping it would keep the weeds away.

But weeds grew anyway.

It’s just the way it is.

Which brings me to my other favorite lyrics from Scott’s song. (Yes we’re on a first name basis because that’s how he makes you feel when you hear his songs & stories. Go follow him on Facebook: www.facebook.com/scottseanwhitesongs)

“I’m pulling weeds …
… getting mad about things that don’t matter that much … carrying around that heavy old grudge … worrying about what other people think … yeah it’s all gotta go so my heart can breathe …

Goodbye fear
Goodbye doubt
And things I can’t do a thing about

Goodbye guilt
Goodbye shame
It’s time I make a little space
And say hello to grace.”

You just have to listen to the song.
Tell me how your heart settles when you hear those words … “and say hello to grace.”

I think that’s the name of this next chapter of my life. Hello to Grace.
